Emotional Toolbox For Kids

About Emotional Toolbox for Kids

Welcome to our Emotional Toolbox for Kids, a social-emotional learning group!

This program was designed for children ranging from early childhood (ages 5-8 years old) to middle childhood (ages 9-13 years old) using methods that are more developmentally appropriate. It incorporates cognitive-behavioural treatment, including affective education, cognitive restructuring, and the emotional toolbox (emotional regulation skills). A parental component is also included to encourage practice at home, fostering the generalization of skills outside the therapy setting.

Our Approach

We believe that every child has the right to reach their full potential and embrace their true selves. Emotional Toolbox for Kids provides a fun and engaging environment where children can develop their social skills and build confidence.

We understand the importance of providing quality support, which is why we have created a professional, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

How It Works

Social Skills Group

Our social skills group is based on a cognitive-behavioural approach. The primary strategies used in this group include: affective education, skill building through an emotional toolbox, and cognitive restructuring.

This program consists of 18 weekly group sessions. Each session is 110 minutes.

Program Structure

Children meet once weekly as a group for 110 minute sessions over the course of nine weeks.

Parents meet simultaneously with another therapist who reviews the skills, addresses any challenges, and provides practice assignments for the parent and child to work on together during the following week.

The below curriculum is designed to be led by one therapist and one assistant, with a group of 3 to 4 students, ranging from early childhood (ages 5-8) to middle childhood (ages 9-13). Our therapist will conduct an interview and assessment to determine the child’s suitability for the group before acceptance.

Why Choose the Emotional Toolbox for Kids?

Children will learn:

Children are specifically taught to recognize both positive and negative emotions, along with the vocabulary to express these emotions accurately. They also learn to identify the bodily sensations, thoughts, and behaviours that occur when they are upset, which can serve as early warning signs or clues of emotional escalation.

Children are taught various strategies to handle anger, anxiety, and sadness. These tools include techniques to release emotional tension (e.g. physical activities like exercise) or to soothe emotional arousal (e.g. relaxation techniques like deep breathing). Additional tools focus on improving help-seeking behaviours, managing thoughts, and engaging in pleasurable activities, with strategies that include social, cognitive, and special interest approaches.

Children learn that they can sometimes change their thoughts to feel better. They are taught to identify thoughts that may increase anxiety or anger (e.g. “They will laugh at me”) and replace them with more positive, calming thoughts (e.g., “I can stay calm”). Additionally, children are encouraged to use pleasant thoughts to counteract the effects of unpleasant ones.
