About SocialScape Explorer

The SocialScape Explorer Group at Sparkling Seeds Children & Youth Therapy and Development Centre is a 10-week program specially crafted for children ages 8-14 with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This program provides a structured, supportive environment where children can develop essential social and emotional skills to build meaningful relationships through play therapy and guided activities.

Our Approach

The SocialScape Explorer Group combines expert facilitation with interactive play therapy. Each session is led by licensed therapists who create a safe, engaging space for children to learn emotional regulation, enhance social interaction, and practice communication skills. Our approach also involves parents as active co-change agents to reinforce learning outside of sessions.

How It Works

In-Clinic Social Skills Sessions

Every week, children attend a 1.5-hour session led by licensed therapists who specialize in social skills and emotional regulation. These sessions incorporate play therapy interventions and structured activities to teach social skills in a safe, supportive environment. Children learn and practice essential skills, such as emotional regulation, relationship building, and effective communication through interactive games and exercises. By participating in these sessions, children gain confidence in managing emotions, navigating social situations, and building connections.

Parental Involvement and Support

Parents play an integral role in the SocialScape Explorer Group. Therapists provide guidance and resources to help parents reinforce social skills at home. From time to time, parents receive tailored strategies to support their child’s learning, alongside recommendations for activities that can be done outside the clinic. Parents are encouraged to communicate with therapists, share observations, and ask questions to further support their child’s progress.

Engaging Play Activities and Immediate Therapeutic Feedback

The SocialScape Explorer Group incorporates interactive play activities designed to capture children’s attention and encourage social and emotional expression. Therapists are actively present, providing immediate therapeutic feedback to help each child understand their emotions, behaviours, and reactions in real-time. Through playful, engaging scenarios, children receive prompt responses that model healthy coping strategies, reinforce positive social skills, and encourage self-awareness, helping them process experiences constructively as they unfold.

Constructive Limit Setting Through Environmental Control

Instead of imposing direct restrictions on the children, therapists create a supportive and structured environment that organically encourages healthy boundaries and respect. This approach helps children to internalize limits as positive and recognize boundaries as necessary aspects of healthy relationships rather than as restrictions. For example, organizing the space to guide the flow of interaction and providing clear expectations for shared materials fosters self-regulation and mutual respect, allowing children to explore within a framework that prioritizes safety, autonomy, and self-discipline.

Facilitating Natural Social Interactions Through Play

Play serves as a dynamic medium for social engagement between children and therapists, promoting genuine, spontaneous interactions that reflect real-life social dynamics. Therapists engage children in activities that promote cooperation, communication, and empathy, such as collaborative games or turn-taking exercises. These interactions give children hands-on practice in social skills, allowing therapists to gently model and encourage behaviours like active listening, sharing, and responding to peers. This approach helps children develop essential social abilities within an enjoyable and relaxed setting.

Helping Children Identify and Express Emotions

Therapists play an active role in helping children recognize and articulate their feelings by naming emotions, offering empathetic reflections, and providing constructive feedback. During activities, therapists may gently identify and label emotions the children might be experiencing—such as excitement, frustration, or curiosity—to encourage emotional literacy. By validating each child’s experiences and providing age-appropriate feedback, therapists help children gain insight into their own emotional worlds, empowering them to communicate their needs and feelings more effectively in social situations.

Parent Training and Resources

Parents receive training on social skill interventions that can be practiced at home, as well as resources to help them reinforce their child’s learning outside of sessions. Additionally, they can consult with therapists for guidance on how to support social skill development in everyday situations. Parents also participate in ongoing discussions about group dynamics and behavioural strategies, ensuring they feel equipped to support their child’s progress.

Intake Procedure

After an initial intake call, families complete the readiness questionnaire. Following a free consultation interview, suitable candidates are added to the program list, and parents are informed of scheduling details. Consent forms and fees are collected prior to the program start.

Program Structure

The SocialScape Explorer Group is designed to support children with high-functioning ASD in developing crucial social and emotional skills, with a focus on family involvement and consistent practice.

Before starting the program, each child undergoes an initial assessment to evaluate social and play skills. This assessment, along with a readiness questionnaire completed by parents, allows therapists to create a customized support plan tailored to each child’s needs. Parents also meet with a therapist for an intake consultation to ensure the program aligns with their child’s goals.

Every week, children participate in structured, therapist-led sessions focused on social skills development. These sessions take place in our clinic and are designed to foster emotional regulation, social interaction, and communication skills. Each 1.5-hour session includes:

  • Social connection activities to build rapport and ease into the group setting.
  • Focused social skills activities using play therapy and interactive games to practice effective communication, emotional regulation, and relationship building.
  • Arts and crafts time to encourage self-expression and creativity in a collaborative environment.
  • Parent feedback and guidance to provide updates, strategies, and support for reinforcing skills at home.

This program is designed to help children develop a deeper understanding of their own emotions, leading to greater insight and adaptability in their interactions with the world around them. Through dynamic, hands-on interactions with therapists, children are encouraged to explore and test various strategies for expressing their emotions and feelings in appropriate, constructive ways.

A sensory-friendly approach is embedded within the program, providing children with calming breaks and access to a designated quiet area equipped with sensory tools and soothing elements. These resources allow children to step away and self-regulate when overwhelmed, so they can return to the group feeling more grounded. By supporting both emotional expression and sensory needs, the program fosters a safe, nurturing environment where children can grow their emotional awareness, practice self-regulation, and build confidence in navigating social settings.

Parents are actively involved as co-change agents, receiving training on social skills coaching and strategies for home support. They are provided with practical resources and tools for reinforcing learning between sessions, including ideas for at-home practice and guidance on positive social interactions. Consultations with therapists allow parents to ask questions, review progress, and receive individualized advice on supporting their child’s social development.
